Top tips for your CV & Application

Starting out in the VFX industry? Here are my tips collected over the years from industry professionals on what to look out for when creating your CV.

Start with the Basics

Make sure to include your full name and email. As you review your CV or application email, imagine you’re reading it for the first time and ask yourself: Is it clear and does it answer all the important questions?

Know your department

Ensure your CV and cover letter clearly state the department you’re aiming to work in, whether it’s 2D, 3D. It’s important to know which department you see yourself working in, and any experience you have that is relevant to this.

Company Research

Double-check you’re using the correct company name in your application. Mention specific projects or achievements of the company to show you’ve done your homework, and explain why you’d be a great asset to their team.

Simplicity is Key

Your CV should communicate everything necessary on a single page. Use bullet points and concise sentences. Imagine you have just 30 seconds to make your case—does your CV provide all the relevant information to potentially be the right candidate?

Contact Info & Availability

Ensure you would be easy to reach. Have you included your mobile number and e-mail?

Work Eligibility

State clearly in your CV or cover letter if you’re eligible to work in the country you’re applying for. If applicable outline any sponsorship requirements.

Stay Up To Date

Make sure your CV highlights your most recent experience and accomplishments.

Final checklist before applying

  • Spelling and grammar check completed.
  • Included all crucial personal information.
  • Clear about desired department and career path.

  • Contact information is clear.
  • Work eligibility is clearly stated, if needed.
  • CV is current with latest positions and experiences.
  • Checked that the CV is attached before sending.
  • Email is addressed to the right company.
